nbc's ron mot is there for us in boston. we begin with nbc's michelle franzen, who's live at laguardia airport. let's get to the travel problems with you, michelle. are they improving? >> reporter: they are improving, alex. this is probably one of the best days since the storm blew in here and buried areas of snow. we're at laguardia. people filing through here most of the day. a handful of cancellations here at the airport. overall, just fewer than 600 airports around the country. that is a far cry from the last few days. air travel as well as road travel frozen in time. the monster storm blizzard literally stopped vehicles in their tracks. >> snow all over the place. >> reporter: along the long island expressway and ramps, frustration and a trail of scattered vehicles. some remain abandoned in drifts. >> how do i get out of this mess? >> reporter: dozens of drivers had to be rescued after spending part or all night in bone-chilling temperatures. in connecticut and rhode island, phones are finally open this morning after cr

i don't think they want what they have in front of us either, both of us are using it for political leverage to battle the other side. that won't solve the problem. >> i can ask you about the buzz of ashley judd running for senate. >> of course. >> she met with some pretty big democratic donors in the state. does she have what it takes to beat senator mitch mcconnell, the senate minority leader? >> absolutely. there is virtually no excitement at all about re-electing mitch mcconnell in the state. a state-wide poll recently shows 75% of kentuckians, 35% of republicans will definitely vote to re-elect him. plenty of energy to retire him after five terms and nobody i think could capture that energy better than somebody like ashley judd who has enormous star power, beloved in the commonwealth, eight generations her family has been in the state. university of kentucky's number one fan, and also she's a very, very smart woman who is very active in political issues, she's got a master's in public policy from harvard. she's very, very engaged, and i think she would be a terrific candidate. >> wow. t

i use it all the time. thank you very much, craig melvin. >>> let's get a report now from the weather channel's mike seidel in massachusetts where the nor'easter is causing serious havoc on the coastline. >> reporter: over 20 inches of snow has fallen here at revere beach. couple that with wind gusts over 60 miles per hour. and we've had drifts 3 to 4 feet deep. a lot of blowing snow around. but the plows have been going all night up revere beach boulevard. behind me look at the wave action. these are about 10 to 12-footers. they've been tempered by a break water land you can't see in the distance. but down the coast, those areas are getting battered by 2 20-footers. in haul they've had mandatory evacuations. voluntary evacuations where you throw those waves and throw that into the mix with a surge of 2 to 3 feet, we'll have issues with beach front properties. back here the beach front property looks fine over revere beach. seawall, elevation, and the waves never got over the seawall. you can see the snow s
